Bookbinding Workshop

$100.00

June 18 | 6-9pm | The Tuesday Club Cafe

Making your own book: an intro to basic binding techniques | A workshop for taking time out to make beautiful handmade objects

This fun workshop will walk you through two different binding techniques: the pamphlet stitch and Japanese stab binding. These are “foundation” bindings that open a whole range of creative possibilities. We’ll be using simple materials: needle, thread and glues but with a variety of new and recycled paper and card to create unique handmade books emphasising texture, form, colour and shape. You’ll come away with two books that can be used as a personal diary, or as an album to house photographs, letters, favourite recipes or other mementos, or given as a gift for someone else to fill.

What to bring
Materials will be supplied but you can also bring along any special papers, cards/cardboard and heavy thread to use as part of your own books.

Bio
Monica has been creating handmade books for over 25 years, mostly from whatever materials were on hand at the time, and often while traveling. As a bona-fide bibliophile, she will show you a range of her own books: travel diaries, botanical forays, and artist’s books, a plethora of slim volumes filled with writing, poetry, photos, printed ephemera, drawings both abstract and realistic. She’ll share how the style of binding connects to the content of the book and vice versa: how what is inside a book can shape the way it’s bound.

No prior experience is needed. Classes are limited to 10 people and suitable for ages 13 and over. All materials and tools are provided, along with a post-session beer or AF drink.
